For almost every state there is a state genealogical society, a state genealogical council, or both.

In addition to their own work, Indiana groups many times help coordinate the efforts of local societies throughout the Indiana.

Their unique publications, newsletters and quarterlies, supplement those created through the area societies.

Indiana Newspapers & Publications

Indiana Genealogical publications (magazines, newsletters, periodicals, books, etc.) contain all types of invaluable information about specific ancestors, whole lineages and families, places in time, and about all sorts of genealogical records and repositories.

There are several major manuscript collections that contain Indiana genealogical information. Some of them can be found at the Indiana State Library and the Indiana Historical Society.

One of those collections is Society of Friends Records (meetings minutes include records of marriages, births, deaths, removals, and new members).

Another is Francis Vigo (fur trader) Collection; William H. English Collection (1741-1928).

Newspapers

The Indiana Gazette was the first newspaper published in Indiana. Its first issue was published in 1804 at Vincennes.

The Indiana State Library Archives Division and the Indiana University Library hold the biggest collections of newspapers in the state.

“Indiana Newspaper Bibliography” lists the names of newspapers from across the state according to town, city, and county. An index to it is available. It contains around 8,000 listings covering the years of 1804 to 1980 and where those original newspapers or copies of them can be found today.

Starting as early as 1852 Indiana’s county recorders began collection their own county’s newspapers in bound volumes.
