Houston County, Tennessee (Map It) was created on January 21, 1871 from Dickson County, Stewart County, Humphreys County and Montgomery County. This Houston County was named in honor of Sam Houston (1793–1863), Tennessee governor and congressman, president of the Republic of Texas, U.S. Senator from Texas, and Texas governor.

Houston County is bordered by Stewart County (north), Montgomery County (northeast), Dickson County (east), Humphreys County (south) and Benton County (west) .
