Washington County, Georgia (Map It) was created on February 25, 1784 from Creek Cession of 1783. Portions of Washington County were used to create Greene County in 1786, Hancock County in 1793, Montgomery County in 1793, Warren County in 1793, and Johnson County in 1858). Washington County was named in honor of George Washington (1732 - 99), the first President of the United States, although named after him as a general.
Washington County is bordered by  Glascock County (northeast), Jefferson County (east), Johnson County (south), Wilkinson County (southwest), Baldwin County (west), Hancock County (northwest)

The Washington County Courthouse is located in Sandersville, Georgia. The County Courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1855 and by Sherman's Troops in 1865, most records were destroyed.

The County Clerk of Superior Court has jurisdiction over cases for title to land and equity, felony cases, adoptions, divorces, child support and custody enforcement.
