York County, Maine (Map It) was created on November 20, 1652 from the southern part of the District of Maine (originally Yorkshire County, Massachusetts , renamed York County in 1668). This county was named in honor of James, Duke of York, later King James II of England.

York County is bordered by Oxford County, Cumberland County (northeast), Rockingham County, New Hampshire  (southwest), Strafford County, New Hampshire  (west), Carroll County, New Hampshire  (northwest).

The County Registry of Deeds is the place where all transactions of a Real Property nature are recorded so that the public is made aware of their existence. Deeds, mortgages, tax liens, water liens, declaration of homestead and many other kinds of documents regarding the title and ownership of real estate are noted permanently in official records.
