Granville County, North Carolina (Map It) was created on June 28, 1746 from Edgecombe County. This county was named for John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville (1690–1763), who inherited one-eighth share in the Province of Carolina through his great-grandfather George Carteret.
Granville County is bordered by Mecklenburg County, Virginia (north), Vance County (east), Franklin County (southeast), Wake County (south), Durham County (southwest), Person County (west), Halifax County, Virginia (northwest) .
