Jefferson County, Florida (Map It) was created on January 6, 1827 from Leon County. Jefferson County was named for Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), the third President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence.

Jefferson Co. Historical Events:
- Had been the scene of bitter war between the Spanish and English and their Indian allies.
- Battle of Ayavalla, a few miles southwest of the present Monticello, Jan. 25,, 1704.
- Achille Murat, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte died near Wacissa, April 15, 1847.
