Roane County, West Virginia (Map It) was created on March 11, 1856 from portions of Gilmer County, Jackson County and Kanawha County. The county was named in honor of Judge Spencer Roane (1762-1822), Virginia Supreme Court justice.

Roane County is bordered by Wirt County (north), Calhoun County (east), Clay County (southeast), Kanawha County (south), Jackson County (west).
