Monroe County, Georgia (Map It) was created on May 15, 1821 from Creek Cession of 1821. Portions of Monroe County were used to create the following counties: Bibb County and Pike County (1822), Butt County (1825), and Lamar County (1920) . Monroe County was named in honor of James Monroe (1758 - 1831), the fifth President of the United States and the creator of the Monroe Doctrine of 1823.
Monroe County is bordered by  Butts County (north), Jasper County (northeast), Jones County (east), Bibb County, Crawford County (south), Upson County (southwest), Lamar County (west)

- Monroe County Clerk of Superior Court has Land Records from 1822 and Court Records from 1824. The County Clerk of Superior Court has jurisdiction over cases for title to land and equity, felony cases, adoptions, divorces, child support and custody enforcement.
