Putnam County, West Virginia (Map It) was created on March 11, 1848 from portions of Cabell County, Kanawha County and Mason County. The county was named in honor of General Israel Putnam of Massachusetts (1718-1790), American Revolutionary War general.
Putnam County is bordered by Mason County (north), Jackson County (northeast), Kanawha County (east), Lincoln County (south), Cabell County (west).
