Iron County, Missouri (Map It) was created on February 17, 1857 from Madison County, Reynolds County, St. Francois County, Washington County and Wayne County. The county was named for the abundance of iron ore in the area.

Iron County is bordered by Washington County (north), St. Francois County (northeast), Madison County (east), Wayne County (southeast), Reynolds County (southwest), Dent County (west), Crawford County (northwest).
