Sumter County, Alabama (Map It) was created on December 18, 1832 from former Choctaw Indian territory by the Choctaw Cession of 1832.. Sumter county was named in honor of Thomas Sumter (1734–1832), U.S. Congressman from South Carolina.
Sumter County is bordered by Pickens County (north), Greene County (northeast), Marengo County (southeast), Choctaw County (south), Lauderdale County, Mississippi (southwest), Kemper County, Mississippi (west), Noxubee County, Mississippi (northwest).

The Sumter County Courthouse is located in Livingston, Alabama which was established in 1833. Livingston was named the Sumter County seat in 1832, and the first county courthouse was completed in 1833. The current courthouse was built in 1903. There was record loss due to a courthouse fire in 1901.
