Amherst County, Virginia (Map It) was created in April 07, 1761 and was formed from Albemarle County. Amherst county was named for the Jeffery Amherst, British conqueror of Quebec during the Seven Years War and colonial governor of Virginia .
Amherst County is bordered by Rockbridge County (northwest), Nelson County (northeast), Appomattox County (southeast), Campbell County (south), Independent city of Lynchburg (south), Bedford County (southwest).

Old Amherst County, VA Courthouse
The Amherst County Courthouse is located in Amherst, Virginia. The old courthouse was built in 1870. The first sections of the current Amherst courthouse date from 1970 with a newer section seven years later.
