Cleveland County, North Carolina (Map It) was created on January 11, 1841 from Lincoln County and Rutherford County. This county was named for Benjamin Cleveland (1738–1806), a colonel in the American Revolutionary War who took part in the Battle of Kings Mountain.
Cleveland County is bordered by Burke County (north), Lincoln County (east-northeast), Gaston County (east-southeast), York County, South Carolina (southeast), Cherokee County, South Carolina (south), Rutherford County (west).
