Sumter County, Florida (Map It) was created on January 8, 1853 from Marion County. Sumter County was named for Thomas Sumter (1734–1832), general in the American Revolution.

Sumter County is bordered by Marion County (north), Lake County (east), Polk County (southeast), Pasco County (southwest), Citrus County (west), Hernando County (west).

Sumter Co. Historical Events:

  • This county was very sparsely settled until after the close of the Seminole Wars.
  • It was here, near Bushnell, that the command of Major Dade was massacred by Indians in 1835.
  • The Dade Memorial Park commemorates their sacrifice.
