Desha County, Arkansas (Map It) was created on December 12, 1838 and was formed from Arkansas County. Parts of Desha County was used to form the following counties: Lincoln 1871.

Other county boundry changes occured when Part annexed to Drew 21 January 1861, part of Chicot attached 10 February 1879, part of Lincoln attached 10 March 1879, line with Lincoln changed 27 March 1925. Desha County was named in honor of Benjamin Desha, a soldier in the War of 1812.

Desha County is bordered by Arkansas County (north), Phillips County (northeast), Bolivar County, Mississippi (east), Chicot County (south), Drew County (southwest), Lincoln County (northwest).

Desha County, AR Courthouse

The Desha County Courthouse is located in Arkansas City, Arkansas. Information from the Arkansas History Commission indicates record loss from a courthouse fire in the 1860s. The County Clerk of Circuit Court is the clerk of the circuit, chancery court, and juvenile court and usually acts as the ex-officio recorder of the county. The duties of the clerk are to maintain a record of all proceedings of the circuit, chancery and juvenile courts and to prepare the dockets for courts. They are also the ex-officio county recorder; and is responsible for recording deeds, mortgages, liens, and surety bonds, and many other orders and instruments which involve property within the county.
