Coles County, Illinois (Map It) was created on December 25, 1830 from Clark County and Edgar County. Coles County was named for Edward Coles (1786–1868), second Governor of Illinois, responsible for the abolition of slavery in Illinois .

- Coles County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds has Marriage Records from 1831, Birth & Death Records from 1877 and Land Records from 1830. The Recorder's duties are receiving, filing and maintaining all records related to real property in our county.
