Refugio County, Texas (Map It) was created on March 17, 1836 as one of the original 23 counties . This county was named for its county seat, which was named for the Spanish mission Nuestra Señora del Refugio, "Our Lady of Refuge" .

Refugio County is bordered by Victoria County (north), Calhoun County (northeast), Aransas County (southeast), San Patricio County (south), Bee County (west), Goliad County (northwest).

Many records were destroyed in a courthouse fire in January 1879.

• Refugio County Clerk has Birth & Death Records from 1903, Marriage Records from 1851, Land Records from 1839, Probate Records from 1840 and Court Records from 1841. The County Clerk's office is the place where all transactions having to do with land are recorded and kept on file. They take marriage license applications, issues marriage licenses, files the license after the marriage, and maintains a permanent record of the marriage, surveys and plats of subdivisions, Armed Forces discharge papers for all veterans who reside in the county. Some naturalization records have been found with the deeds.
