Yakima County, Washington (Map It) was created on January 21, 1865 from Ferguson County. The county was named for the  Yakama Native American tribe. The county was first settled in 1858 after the Indian wars of 1855-57 resulted in the formation of the Yakima Indian Reservation. In the 1870s cattlemen and farmers began constructing irrigation systems. Growth continued into the 1880s, with the coming of the Northern Pacific Railroad creating a boom in the county. In 1950 the federal government began a major series of irrigation projects in the county that had profound results. Today Yakima County is one of the nation's richest agricultural counties. It leads the state in apple, pear, peach and grape production, while beets, hop and mint growing are also important. Its economy also encompasses wood products and food processing industries. .

Yakima County is bordered by Pierce County (northwest), Lewis County (west), Skamania County (southwest), Kittitas County (north), Klickitat County (south), Grant County (northeast), Benton County (east).

The Clerk's Office DOES NOT DO RESEARCH. Most staff will assist people in finding the materials, but it is up to the individual to do the research. Although originally held in the county seat, many county land, probate, and court records have been transferred to the state archive's regional branches.

  • Yakima County Auditor has Birth and Death Records from 1890 to 1907, Marriage Records from 1877 and Land Records from 1882. The County Auditor has many responsibilities which include the recording of real property documents such as deeds and other recorded documents, issuing various licenses such as marriage liscense.
  • Yakima County Clerk has Court Records from 1874 and Probate Records from 1882 . The County Clerk is the administrator of the Superior Court Clerk's Office.
