Lamar County, Texas (Map It) was created on December 17, 1840 from Red River County. This county was named for Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, the third president of the Republic of Texas (1838–1842) .
Lamar County is bordered by Choctaw County, Oklahoma (north), Red River County (east), Delta County (south), Fannin County (west), Bryan County, Oklahoma (northwest).

Courthouse was destroyed in a courthouse fire in March 1916, most records of the district clerk were destroyed. Birth, death and marriage records were not lost.
- Lamar County Clerk has Birth & Death Records from 1903, Marriage Records from 1841, Land Records from 1838, Probate Records from 1841 and Court Records from 1863. The County Clerk's office is the place where all transactions having to do with land are recorded and kept on file. They take marriage license applications, issues marriage licenses, files the license after the marriage, and maintains a permanent record of the marriage, surveys and plats of subdivisions, Armed Forces discharge papers for all veterans who reside in the county. Some naturalization records have been found with the deeds.
