Houston County, Texas (Map It) was created on June 12, 1837 from Nacogdoches County. This county was named for Sam Houston (1793–1863), general of the Texan Revolution, commander at the Battle of San Jacinto and later president of the Republic of Texas, U.S. Senator and governor of the state of Texas .
Houston County is bordered by Anderson County (north), Cherokee County (northeast), Angelina County (east), Trinity County (southeast), Walker County (south), Madison County (southwest), Leon County (west).

Courthouse , a brick building, which replaced the first courthouse in 1851, was destroyed by a fire of mysterious origin in February 1865 . The third courthouse and jail burned in November 1882 . Most early records were destroyed
- Houston County Clerk has Birth & Death Records from 1903, Marriage Records from 1882, Land Records from 1865, Probate Records from 1859 and Court Records from 1878. The County Clerk's office is the place where all transactions having to do with land are recorded and kept on file. They take marriage license applications, issues marriage licenses, files the license after the marriage, and maintains a permanent record of the marriage, surveys and plats of subdivisions, Armed Forces discharge papers for all veterans who reside in the county. Some naturalization records have been found with the deeds.
