Wise County, Texas (Map It) was created on January 23, 1856 from Cooke County. This county was named for Henry Alexander Wise, the U.S. Congressman and future thirty-eighth governor of Virginia (1856–1860) who supported the annexation of Texas.
Wise County is bordered by Montague County (north), Cooke County (northeast), Denton County (east), Tarrant County (southeast), Parker County (south), Jack County (west).

Courthouse and many county records were destroyed by fire.
- Wise County Clerk has Birth & Death Records from 1870 for Birth; 1903 for death, Marriage Records from 1881, Land Records from 1856, Probate Records from 1882 and Court Records from 1882. The County Clerk's office is the place where all transactions having to do with land are recorded and kept on file. They take marriage license applications, issues marriage licenses, files the license after the marriage, and maintains a permanent record of the marriage, surveys and plats of subdivisions, Armed Forces discharge papers for all veterans who reside in the county. Some naturalization records have been found with the deeds.
