Chautauqua County, Kansas (Map It) was created on March 25, 1875 from Godfroy County and Howard County. The county was named for Chautauqua County, New York, from which many early settlers hailed and the birthplace of Edward Jaquins, a member of the Kansas House who in 1875 introduced the bill dividing Howard County into Elk and Chautauqua. The New York county, in turn, derives its name from an Indian word meaning 'foggy place.'.
Chautauqua County is bordered by Elk County (north), Montgomery County (east), Washington County, Oklahoma, , Osage County, Oklahoma (south), Cowley County (west).

- Chautauqua County Clerks Office has Birth Records from 1886-1911, Marriage Records from 1870 and Death Records from 1896-98; 1910-11. The Register of Deeds shall have custody of and safely keep and preserve all the books, records, deeds, maps, papers and microphotographs deposited or kept in the office of the Register of Deeds. The Register of Deeds shall also record or cause to be recorded all deeds, mortgages, maps, instruments and writings authorized by law to be recorded in the office of the Register of Deeds and shall perform all other duties as are required by law.
