Pitkin County, Colorado (Map It) was created on February 23, 1881 and was split from Gunnison County. Pitkin County was named in honor of Frederick Walker Pitkin, the second Governor of the State of Colorado.
Pitkin County is bordered by Eagle County (northeast), Lake County (east), Chaffee County (southeast), Gunnison County (south), Mesa County (west), Garfield County (northwest).
