La Plata County, Colorado (Map It) was created on February 10, 1874 from Lake County and Conejos County. La Plata County was named for the many silver deposits in the area. La plata is a Spanish expression for the silver.

La Plata County is bordered by San Juan County (north), Hinsdale County (northeast), Archuleta County (east), San Juan County, New Mexico (south), Montezuma County (west), Dolores County (northwest).
