San Juan County, Colorado (Map It) was created on  Janurary 31, 1876 from Lake County. San Juan County was named after the San Juan River and San Juan Mountains, which in turn were named for Saint John the Evangelist.
San Juan County is bordered by Ouray County (north), Hinsdale County (east), Laplata County (south), Montezuma County (southwest), Dolores County (west), San Miguel County (northwest).
