Leon County, Texas (Map It) was created on March 17, 1846 from Robertson County. This county was named for either Mexican empresario Martín De León, who founded Victoria, Texas, or the león, a local variety of yellow wolf .

Courthouse fire on the night of November 9, 1885 destroyed the courthouse. Many records were lost. Most of the records for the county were destroyed.
