San Augustine County, Texas (Map It) was created on March 17, 1836 as one of the original 23 counties. It was originally created on March 6, 1834 from Nacogdoches County, established as a municipality by Mexico. This county was named for presumably Augustine of Hippo (354–430) .

San Augustine County is bordered by Shelby County (north), Sabine County (east), Jasper County (south), Angelina County (southwest), Nacogdoches County (west).
