Colfax County, New Mexico (Map It) was created on January 25, 1869 from Mora County. The county was named in honor of Schuyler Colfax, the seventeenth vice president of the United States.

Colfax County is bordered by Taos County (west), Mora County (south), Harding County (south), Union County (east), Las Animas County, Colorado (north), Costilla County, Colorado.
