Powell County, Montana (Map It) was created on January 31, 1901 from Deer Lodge County. The county was named for Mount Powell, which in turn was named for John Wesley Powell (1834 - 1902), the early environmentalist and explorer.
Powell County is bordered by Flathead County (north), Lewis and Clark County (northeast), Jefferson County (south), Deer Lodge County (south), Granite County (southwest), Missoula County (west).
