Sutter County, California (Map It) was created on February 18, 1850 as one of the original 27 counties . Sutter County was named for General John Augustus Sutter, a native of Switzerland, who obtained a large land grant from the Mexican government and called his first settlement New Helvetia (now the City of Sacramento). In 1841, the general established a great stock ranch in this area to which he retired in 1850 when gold seekers deprived him of most of his holdings at Sacramento

Sutter County is bordered by Sacramento County (south), Yolo County (south), Colusa County (west), Butte County (north), Yuba County (east), Placer County (southeast) .

Sutter County Cities and Towns include Yuba City, Live Oak .

Old Sutter County Courthouse

The Sutter County Courthouse is located in Yuba City, California. Land was later added from counties Placer (1866) and Butte (1852, 1854, and 1866). The Courthhouse was destroyed by fire in 1871. Courthouse History - The first, built in 1858, was destroyed by fire in 1871. The cause of the disaster, according to one news report, was "mice gnawing the heads of matches left in the office." A second and larger courthouse, completed in 1873, was also set fire, this time by "a Cornishman who was in custody awaiting commitment to the Stockton asylum." The current courthouse is an elegant replica of the second, built in the Classical Revival style and largely preserved in its original state.

Some early court records from the various courts may have been sent to the California State Archives. Besides court minutes and judgements, these records include tax lists, wills, deeds, estate inventories, and marriage bonds. The California State Archives has microfilm of selected county records, 1850–1919.

The County Recorder-Clerk is s responsible for examination and recording of all documents presented for recording that deal with establishing ownership of land in the County or as required by statute; administers the real property transfer tax law and maintains a permanent record and indexes of all documents for public viewing plus providing certified copies requested by the public; recording of all lawful documents such as deeds, deeds of trust, judgments, liens, affidavits, Uniform Commercial Code Financial Statements, etc; and the filing of Births, Deaths, and Marriages.

The County Clerk of Superior Court has probate books and files from the county's superior court, civil court records, and naturalizations. Divorces may be here or in the Recorders Office, depending on how it was filed.
