In July of 1905, South Dakota started recording marriages, births, and deaths on the state level. The State Department of Health can provide copies of later records. The Register of Deeds in each county may hold some of that county’s early marriage records. Pennington County and Minnehaha County marriage records have been published. Each county’s Clerk of the Court may hold divorce records from before 1905.

  • Birth, Death and Marriage Records: since July 1905. Copies of the Birth, Death and Marriage records are available from the Register of Deeds in the county where the event occurred.
  • Divorce Records: since July 1905. Copies of the divorce records are available from the Clerk of Courts in the county where the divorce was obtained.
