Douglas County, South Dakota (Map It) was created on January 08, 1837 from Charles Mix County. The county was named in honor of Stephen A. Douglas (1813 - 1861), U.S. Senator from Illinois and advocate of popular sovereignty as a middle ground in the slavery debate.
Douglas County is bordered by Aurora County (north), Davison County (northeast), Hutchinson County (east), Charles Mix County (southwest).
