San Juan County, New Mexico (Map It) was created on February 24, 1887 from Rio Arriba County. The county was named in honor of San Juan River, itself named after the Catholic saint.
San Juan County is bordered by Rio Arriba County (east), Sandoval County (south), McKinley County (south), Apache County, Arizona (west), San Juan County, Utah (northwest), Montezuma County, Colorado (north), La Plata County, Colorado (north), Archuleta County, Colorado (northeast).
