Sierra County, New Mexico (Map It) was created on April 3, 1884 from Doña Ana County and Socorro County. The county was named possibly named for the Black Range. (Sierra is mountain range in Spanish.).
Sierra County is bordered by Catron County (north), Socorro County (north), Lincoln County (northeast), Otero County (east), Doña Ana County (south), Luna County (south), Grant County (west).
