Sumter County, Georgia (Map It) was created on December 26, 1831 from Lee County. Portions of Sumter County were used to create Schley County in 1857. Sumter County was named in honor of General Thomas Sumter (1734 - 1832), the "Fighting Gamecock," a hero of the Revolutionary War.
Sumter County is bordered by  Macon County (north-northeast), Dooly County (east), Crisp County, Lee County (south), Terrell County (southwest), Webster County (west), Marion County (northwest), Schley County (northwest)

- Sumter County Clerk of Superior Court has Land Records from 1831 and Court Records from 1831. The County Clerk of Superior Court has jurisdiction over cases for title to land and equity, felony cases, adoptions, divorces, child support and custody enforcement. The clerk also is tasked with recording deeds and maintaining the chain of title to all property in the county.
