Sumter County, Georgia Records

Sumter County, Georgia (Map It) was created on December 26, 1831 from Lee County. Portions of Sumter County were used to create Schley County in 1857. Sumter County was named in honor of General Thomas Sumter (1734 - 1832), the "Fighting Gamecock," a hero of the Revolutionary War.

Sumter County is bordered by  Macon County (north-northeast), Dooly County (east), Crisp County, Lee County (south), Terrell County (southwest), Webster County (west), Marion County (northwest), Schley County (northwest)
