Chatham County, Georgia (Map It) was created on February 5, 1777 from Christ Church and St Philip Parishes. Chatham County was named in honor of William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham (1708 - 78), British Prime Minister sympathetic to the Revolutionary cause.
Chatham County is bordered by Jasper County, South Carolina (northeast), Bryan County (west), Effingham County.

- Chatham County Clerk of Superior Court has Land Records from 1785 and Court Records from 1783. The County Clerk of Superior Court has jurisdiction over cases for title to land and equity, felony cases, adoptions, divorces, child support and custody enforcement. The clerk also is tasked with recording deeds and maintaining the chain of title to all property in the county.
