Los Alamos County, New Mexico (Map It) was created on March 16, 1949 from Sandoval County and Santa Fe County. The county was named for its county seat of Los Alamos, New Mexico, which itself is the Spanish name for the cottonwood tree.
Los Alamos County is bordered by Rio Arriba County (northeast), Santa Fe County (east), Sandoval County (southwest).
