Coos County, New Hampshire Records

Coos County, New Hampshire (Map It) was created on December 24, 1803 from Grafton County. The county was name Coös derives from the Algonquian Indian term meaning crooked, the Indian name of the Connecticut River, which rises in the northernmost end of the county.

Coos County is bordered by Essex County, Vermont (north), Grafton County (north), Carroll County (north), Oxford County, Maine (north), Quebec, Canada (north).

The following dates indicates what vital, land, probate, and court records are in Coos county. The date listed for each record is usually the earliest registration filed. The date does not indicate that there are alot records for that year and does not mean that all such events were actually filed with the clerk.

Fire damaged thirty-three volumes of the pre-1887 deeds and all of the probate records before that date. Damaged deeds were transcribed when possible and are retained in the courthouse. Seven volumes of Grafton deeds relating to Coos County before formation are kept in a separate series with separate indexes covering 1772-1803.
