Rockingham County, New Hampshire Records<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Rockingham County, New Hampshire<\/strong> (Map It<\/a>)<\/em> was created on March 19, 1771<\/strong> as one of the five original counties identified for New Hampshire in 1769. The county was named in honor of Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham<\/a>\u00a0(1730-1782), a two-time\u00a0Prime Minister of Great Britain\u00a0(1765-1766, 1782). It was first settled by Europeans moving north from the Plymouth Colony<\/a> in Massachusetts<\/a> as early as 1623. The government was linked tightly with Massachusetts<\/a> until New Hampshire became a separate colony in 1679, but counties weren't introduced until 1769.<\/p>\n\n

Rockingham County<\/strong> is bordered by Strafford County<\/a>\u00a0(north), York County, Maine<\/a>\u00a0(northeast), Essex County<\/a>, Massachusetts\u00a0(south), Hillsborough County<\/a>\u00a0(west), Merrimack County<\/a>\u00a0(northwest). <\/p>\n\n
